My favorite conference (which is from a list of many) is coming up again April 12-14 2012. This breath-taking conference is the EG Conference (Entertainment Gathering) that gathers in beautiful Monterey CA. I’d be able to write a entire book about why this is the most fascinating gathering I have been to in 10 years, but in simple words, come experience an eclectic gathering filled with mystery, surprise, emotion, connections, and entertainment for a few days in beautiful Monterey…. you will leave imagining the entire world differently, with a different perspective, and a twinkle in your eye again for curiosity, to perhaps create magic.
Come join, this year will be my 4th in a row. Let me know if you can make it and I’ll be sure to connect. Tickets are almost sold out.

This blew my mind away. NeverWet is a treatment to makes any surface liquid resistant. It’s a Hydrophobiccoating that repels any liquid, even thick liquids like syrup, paint, ketchup, etc and repels them off any surface (much like you see on plant leaves). Check out the video above and be awed when you see the white shoes come out of the muddy wet pool. Imagine all the crazy magical applications.

They even applied it to an iphone and let it sit under water for an hour and it was fine. Â Personally I want to treat all my furniture with this stuff, then treat my car, shoes, rugs, etc…. No word on if it is toxic or not, and the product is expected to be available to consumers in 2012.

“At Ross Nanotechnology, we have developed a super hydrophobic coating that completely repels water and heavy oils. Any object coated with our NeverWet  coating literally cannot be touched by liquid. Any liquid placed on this coating is repelled and simply rolls off without touching the underlying surface. Not only is this amazing to see, but it solves a myriad of problems.”

The residents there had no refuse collection so, with the sea so close by the solution seemed obvious – throw the garbage over the edge of the cliffs above their local beach. The burgeoning population of the town proceeded, with abandon reckless if not gleeful (after all, it must have been more fun than the usual taking out of the garbage) to do just that.

They did it with relish and in great volume: glass, household appliances and even motor vehicles went over the edge until the place acquired a new name – The Dumps. It was not until the 1960s that city leaders and the local water board forced the closure of the beach as an illegal dump.

Cleanups followed to remove the largest pieces of detritus, but decades of wear had done their work on much of the glass which had been thrown over the side of the cliffs. The waves and the weather had smashed, pounded and ground the glass in to smooth, small, rounded objects – million upon million of them.

It was not long until the name Glass Beach was adopted instead of the previous, less attractive appellation. In the early years of this century the beach and the surrounding twenty acres were bought by the California State Park system with a view to incorporating it in to the surrounding MacKerricher State Park. After a final cleanup exactly that happened.

It is not the only glass beach created by human activity. There is another in California (Benicia) and one in the Hawaiian bay of Hanapepe. Most curiously perhaps, there is one that exists at Guantanamo Bay. They are all testament to the power of nature to correct the mistakes made by humanity.
It seems that every color of glass can be found on the beach. Those original tippers would be suprised, perhaps, to see what had become of their garbage.

Glass Beach has become very popular with tourists, many of whom scour the beach for the most attractive pieces of glass they can find which they plan to take home as mementoes. Ironically, where it had once been illegal to dump glass on the beach – now, it is against the law to remove it.

A shop in Akihabara called Clone Factory will scan you face, produce a very realistic 3D-print of your head, then attach it to a 20 inch doll of your choice! Wow! A must watch. I’ve followed news of these tribes untouched to the modern world. I had no clue people actually went in to meet them. Watch this footage and several clips online.
via boinboing

“[Video Link] This is a fascinating 15-minute video that shows a hunter-gatherer tribe in Papua New Guinea meeting with people from the outside world for the first time. They are very cautious, but also very curious, about the man on the other side of the river. They eventually cross the river to meet Jean-Pierre Dutilleux, the producer of Tribal Journeys: The Toulambi. When the men see Dutilleux’s clothing, they then look at the clothes they are wearing, as if for the first time. When they stroke Dutilleux’s hair, they then stroke their own hair.

It looks like all five parts of the documentary are on YouTube.”

I’ll post all 5 videos after the jump.

AstroTurf Aeron Chair! Need I say anything else?
To some degee I wished this classic web2.0 chair sensation was covered up in grass, but astro turf has some very intriguing quality to it for an office chair. I guess it also depends on which astro turf it is.

via freshhome.

“The collaboration between Japanese botanic artist Makoto Azuma and furniture designerHerman Miller led to the creation of an unusual version of the Aeron Chair. This AstroTurf covered chair delivers all the important features of the Aeron Chair, with the interesting feature of having a distinct green “skin”. This chair comes as a natural response to the works of Makoto Azuma and Herman Miller, accentuating the decorative inclinations of the first artist and the exceptional design techniques of the latter. The body of the chair – including all the small details – were covered in a green AstroTurf skin, leaving only the wheels and moving parts bare. Just as Herman’s site says: “It’s all about making great design available to consumers“. You can see the AstroTurf covered chair this summer at the Herman Miller store in Tokyo, in the Marunouchi shopping district.”

The piece is currently on display as part of the Fünf Räume (five rooms) exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum NYC through September 5. I can only hope they might let you flick a few of these awesomely tactile switches. (via triangulation)”

I’ve had quite a few friends attend and everyone seems to be energized full of ideas and disruptive ones when they return from this 3 day backyard camp gathering. There is not much online about it, but here is a write up from our friends Andrew on his experience a few years ago! I’ll be back next week with lots to write up about, and keep secret at times. Let me know if your in SF. I’m out there right before Foocamp this week.
