In an ideal world, all materials would be recyclable and everybody would recycle. The harsh reality, though, is that over 75% of water bottles, perhaps the most readily recyclable product in the world, end up in oceans or landfills. So, while it’s critically important to design for recyclability, only in the best-case scenario are the products we design actually recycled.
Enter Planet Green Bottle, with their innovative plastic additive, Reverte. Combined with PET, Reverte offers a time-delayed biodegradability that breaks down plastic even in landfill conditions. By severing the bonds of a carbon chain into pieces that are small enough to be used as food for microbes, Reverte leaves nothing but CO2 and water behind. And, most impressively, the reaction can be delayed for anywhere from 2 or 5 years, so products can live a normal shelf life without fear of spoiling, leaking, dissolving, etc., and is still fully recyclable.
While recycling will always be the Cradle-to-Cradle ideal, Reverte factors in actual, albeit unfortunate, consumer behavior by offering biodegradabilty when recyclability fails. Makes it easier to design with a conscience, offering a good temporary fix until the system encourages 100% recyclability.

We knew that there wasn’t going to be one “fix it all” answer and began to wonder if anything was ever going to be done. The problem was growing every day, more bottles were being manufactured and more bottles were accumulating in places where we didn’t need them.

That’s why decided to do our part and started ENSO Bottles. We are partnering with other companies to offer a PET plastic bottle that will biodegrade, compost or recycle.
Our plastic bottles can enter the normal recycling stream with regular PET plastic bottles.
ENSO’s goal is to achieve sustainability with our plastic bottles. WE feel that ENSO plastic bottles can provide a useful service and have a positive impact on our environment.
We all need to do our part and support recycling programs, construction of bio-reactor landfills and continue developing technology that will make plastics “Earth Friendly.”

So let me get this straight: our country has been working on building a recycling industry and culture for over 25 years, and now, because of “actual, albeit unfortunate, consumer behavior” we are ditching it?
How about a Bottle Bill? Oregon just expanded ours to include all beverage containers.
btw, modern landfills are ‘dry tomb’ engineered to minimize biodegradability.
I like Max’s plan to make bottles that are compostable as well as recyclable — if that is possible.
The article above claims that the bi-product is CO2 and water. What about heavy metals? I have seen reports that heavy metals are a bi-product of the degradation process of oxo-biodegradable “reverte”.
Is there any data behind the claim of CO2 and water, or is this just hype to get traction in a market that is disperately seeking the silver bullet?
